What is a Breast Reduction ?

Breast Reduction is a surgical procedure which is used to decrease the breast size, balancing the size of asymmetrical breast, and redirecting nipples that hang down. It helps to give the breasts a more proportionate size and shape in relation to the body frame. Generally there are two surgical techniques for a breast reduction that are most commonly used; the vertical incision or an inverted "T" incision.

Procedure information

Length of surgery:

Four hours, on average.

Type of surgery:

Short stay.

Anesthesia:

General.

Time admitted:

This is generally an outpatient procedure, but a one day stay may be necessary, depending on the patient.

Postoperative care:

The stitches are going to be removed 10 days after surgery. You may resume light activities and work after about 2 weeks. More vigorous activities and exercise shouldn't be done in the first 6 weeks.

Final results:

The final results are going to be visible after 2 to 3 months.

Scarring:

Barely visible scars will be left around the areola, a horizontal scar will be hidden in the natural crease of the breast (inverted "T" incision) and a vertical one which might be slightly visible depending on how the patient heals.

Special attention:

You will have to wear a special compression bra for at least 3-4 weeks, as well as attending therapy indicated by Dr Carmona or his medical team.

Which preoperative tests are needed to be done before this surgery?

Like for all other procedures as well, we require a recent blood work and for all patients over 40 an EKG with the report from the cardiologist in addition to the blood work.

Will I be able to breastfeed my children?

If you intend to become pregnant, we would encourage you to postpone your breast reduction until afterwards because the improvement from the surgery likely will be reversed. Besides that a breast reduction surgery involves significant changes to your breast, including the removal of some mammary glands which can make breast feeding difficult or impossible in 50% of the cases.

Will my breasts lose sensitivity with this procedure?

It is common to have temporary numbness of the nipples and breast that can last for 1 month or even go up to a year.
