Procedural Information

Length of surgery:

This surgery is rather quick, usually lasting around 45 minutes.

Type of surgery:

This is an outpatient procedure that does not require hospitalization.

Anesthesia:

Local anesthesia or sedation.

Time admitted:

This is an outpatient procedure which requires one to two hours of observation following the procedure. Following this time period, the patient may return home.

Post-operative Recovery:

The stitches will need to be removed after seven days, and the swelling will subside within a couple of weeks.

Final Result:

Results will be noticeable after three weeks.

Scarring:

The scarring will not be visible on the outside of the ear.

Special attention:

A bandage, or band is recommended, to help support the ears.

At what age is otoplasty recommended for children?

Otoplasty is recommended for children between seven and eight years old, when their ears have reached their full size. If the child is younger, it is important to speak with your plastic surgeon and have the child's case evaluated. An otoplasty at an earlier age may be recommended if the child is very unhappy with the size and shape of his or her ears, and/or being made fun of by classmates at school, which can cause self-esteem issues.

Can ear surgery affect my hearing?

No, ear surgery is external, changing the outside of the ear, it does not affect the inner ear and hearing.

What will the normal size of my ear be? 

Between 5.5 to 6 cm long, and 3 to 4.5 cm wide is a normal size, but this varies depending on the age, height and sex of the person.
